Did your mother hound you daily about brushing your teeth? Mine did! I remember my mother’s daily reminders – sometimes sweet and sometimes spicy! – to brush my teeth. I dreaded that phrase, “Did you remember to brush your teeth?”; yet how thankful I am today! That small, persistent act of brushing twice daily has saved me from countless cavities, discomfort, and thousands in dental bills. But perhaps most importantly, it ingrained in me the value of consistent habits. It wasn’t just about my teeth; it was about learning the power of small, intentional acts to build a lifetime of health.

This principle isn’t just about physical habits but also extends to emotional and spiritual practices. Godly habits—those that align our actions with God’s will—shape us into people who reflect Christ in every area of life. They’re transformative, not only bringing health to our bodies but also fostering peace in our souls and closeness to God in our spirits.

If we know that healthy habits bring such profound benefits, why don’t we develop them in areas where we know we’re struggling? The answer often lies in our resistance to the initial discomfort and self-discipline required. We live in a world wired for instant gratification, and it’s easy to ignore the long-term benefits in favor of immediate ease. Jesus totally calls us out on this when He said, “The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak” (Matthew 26:41). Our commitment to godly habits requires a daily “dying to self” (Luke 9:23) that can be challenging but ultimately rewarding beyond measure.

Let’s take an honest inventory of our lives. Are we satisfied with our physical health, our relationships, our careers, or our walk with God? If we find that we’re lacking in any area, what steps are we taking to address it? Ignoring a deficit doesn’t make it disappear; in fact, it leaves us vulnerable to consequences we could avoid with some intentional effort.

Here are five key steps to help you identify and implement godly, healthy habits for your spirit, soul, and body.

Step 1: Reflect and Pray for Clarity

Begin by taking time to reflect on your current habits. Ask God to reveal areas where you might be lacking and where you need His guidance to grow. Pray for wisdom and strength to make changes and to align your heart with His will. Just as the Psalmist prayed, “Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts” (Psalm 139:23), invite the Holy Spirit to illuminate areas where healthy habits are needed.

Step 2: Set Clear, Attainable Goals

Once you’ve identified areas to improve, set clear and realistic goals. These goals might include establishing a daily quiet time with God, adopting a healthier diet, or committing to exercise a few times a week. Small, achievable steps create momentum without overwhelming you. Proverbs 16:3 reminds us to “Commit your work to the Lord, and your plans will be established.” By entrusting our goals to God, we allow Him to guide our progress and sustain us through the process.

Step 3: Build Accountability

Change is easier when we’re not doing it alone. Share your goals with someone who can support and encourage you—whether that’s a spouse, friend, or a spiritual mentor. Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 reminds us of the power of companionship: “Two are better than one… if either of them falls down, one can help the other up.” When we invite others into our journey, we gain both encouragement and accountability.

Step 4: Take Consistent Action with Patience

Building new habits takes time, so don’t be discouraged if you don’t see immediate results. Focus on consistent action, and remember that persistence is key. Just as brushing my teeth twice daily became second nature after years of practice, godly habits will eventually become ingrained in you through repetition. Galatians 6:9 encourages us to “not grow weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.” God honors our faithful efforts.

Step 5: Celebrate Progress and Give Thanks

Acknowledge each step forward, no matter how small. By celebrating our progress and giving thanks, we reinforce the joy and peace that come from aligning our lives with God’s will. This helps build motivation to continue. James 1:17 reminds us that “every good and perfect gift is from above,” and that includes the strength and perseverance we need to build godly habits. By giving thanks, we recognize God’s work in our transformation.

Final Thoughts

Living a life of healthy, godly habits isn’t about perfection; it’s about progress. God’s grace fills in our weaknesses as we pursue Him. When we cultivate habits that honor God, we nourish not just our bodies but our minds and spirits, finding a life that is more aligned with His purposes and more satisfying than anything the world can offer.

Let’s commit to making these habits a way of life. Let’s seek to honor God in our spirit, soul, and body. With God’s help, discipline, and a willingness to grow, we can develop habits that will bring joy, peace, and wholeness—blessings that reach beyond ourselves and touch everyone around us.
